We now offer testing for ADD with the T.O.V.A Test (Test Of Variables of Attention).
The T.O.V.A Test measures both visual and auditory attention using the most up to date software and technology. The results are presented in a comprehensive narrative and graphic report and compare the person’s performance to a “normal” non-ADD subject group to identify potential attention deficits. Check it out here under the ADD testing page:

Autism affects 1 in 88 people according to the Center for Disease Control. I have talked with parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and sometimes they are confused about what the diagnosis means and especially when a professional makes inappropriate comments. For example, a clinical director of a program told a family that their child would “grow out of it.” I also have had a parent tell me that during an IEP meeting the school counselor compared her child to having mental retardation. These examples have stuck with me over the years as there is clearly a level of ignorance about autism, even in the professional community.
When I first started talking to a mom about how neurofeedback would help her child she was very defensive with me and told me that autism is not something you change. I could feel her pain and had empathy for her as I knew how hard she was trying to get answers. The research is really pushing for an early diagnosis. The sooner the child is diagnosed the sooner they can be helped through treatment interventions, including neurofeedback. Here is a link for an article that talks about how neurofeeback helps create muscle memory and connectivity between the different lobes of the brain which can help by decreasing the symptoms of spectrum disorders. http://www.jacobsassociates.org/id25.html Our treatment team is excited to be able to join with FEAT (Families for Effective Autism Treatment) of Southern Nevada at their upcoming Family Night at Sky Zone on September 29th from 6-8pm. If you are not familiar with FEAT they are a non-profit organization of parents and professionals working together to create a network of resources. Feat is committed to helping families by hosting local events, and staying connected with national policies and medical breakthroughs. Please go and check them out: http://featsonv.org
Neurofeedback is an effective alternative to antidepressant medications, especially for children and adolescents.
The FDA has a black box warning on antidepressant medications for children and adolescents cautioning about the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. Recent articles raise concerns about the use and over-use of antidepressant medications: http://qz.com/503078/unlike-adults-it-seems-young-people-on-antidepressants-are-more-likely-to-commit-crimes/ http://thenewdaily.com.au/life/2015/09/16/be-wary-of-antidepressants/ Be an educated consumer for your children’s health needs and decide if neurofeedback is the better choice. Alan I was having a conversation with a fellow therapist late last week about treatment recommendations for a brain injury. I began talking to her about what Neurofeedback does and how effective it can be in helping the brain access different areas that can be blocked due to brain injury or strokes. I started looking around for articles to help this therapist make a good informed decision before she started sending referrals. I came across this article from Psychology Today from Diane Roberts Stoler, Ed.D, who is a neuropsychologist. She talks about her own personal journey with neurofeedback after suffering a stroke. I am adding the links for her articles and encourage you to read these and share them with your friends and family. The more educated people become about the effectiveness of neurofeedback, and especially with personal testimonials, the better they can make informed decisions about treatment.

Another school year is starting and you want your child to be successful. The motivation and determination might be there – it’s a new school year, after all - but are they able to stay focused and pay attention while learning? Many kids have difficulty in school because they want to pay attention, but their brains get in the way – someone makes a noise or a bird flies by the window and it’s all over. Their best efforts are thwarted.
Every day we see children, and adults, too, who struggle with attention deficit difficulties. Children are singled out by teachers and sent to a doctor for a consultation. Oftentimes, the doctor shrugs his or her head and indicates that medications are the only solution. While diet and exercise might help to some extent, and yoga, massage, supplements, and essential oils have all been suggested by some who claim that this is the most efficacious treatment, medications have been the single choice to help manage attention deficits. That is until now. Parents oftentimes are very concerned about giving medications to their children – especially stimulant medications – because of the side effects. “What else is there?” they ask. “Neurotherapy!” we are happy to reply. A research study published by the Journal of Pediatrics in 2014 indicates that childrenwho were treated for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with neurofeedback not only showed a significant decrease in symptoms in a short amount of time, but also that the symptoms remained absent six months after the neurofeedbacktreatment ended. The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses neurofeedback as a “level 1” treatment – level 1 is the highest treatment recommendation. Read the study for yourself: Click here for Article -Sierra |
